Thorite automates aircrete block colour coding

Tuesday 8th February 2005

Compressed air and fluid process systems specialists, Thorite, has helped to provide an automated colour coding package for Goole-based thermal breezeblock manufacturer, Celcon Blocks Ltd.

Celcon manufactures aircrete blocks from power station waste ash residue.

The blocks are available in several densities, and different strengths. The High Strength blocks are identified by an operator manually applying a line of black or orange paint, using a long handled paint roller, as the packs move by on an automated production line.

Thorite worked closely with Celcon in the development of a paint spray system to automate the complete colour coding process. An ARO pumping system linked to eight airless spray nozzles was supplied, activated by a Thorite-designed and produced control panel and sensors. The company then aided with the system’s commissioning and Celcon's own engineers installed the equipment on the production line.

The resulting automated spray package has numerous benefits:

  • manpower can be more productively employed
  • sprayed paint offers significant cost savings over hand application, as around 50% less is required
  • production line speed is increased, with individual nozzle isolation allowing for varying aircrete block pack sizes
  • waste from overspray is avoided by precise nozzle control

Speaking of the project, Thorite's product manager Clive Halliday said: "The Celcon spray package is a typical example of the sort of simple, yet highly efficient automation solutions which are in growing demand. We have a huge variety of process control equipment to select from and by working in close partnership with our customers, can produce significant cost, material and time saving benefits."
