Thorite keeps the pressure on at Starbank Panels

Friday 4th March 2005

Compressed air and fluid process systems specialists, Thorite, have completed the installation of a variety of compressed air production equipment and pipework, for Starbank Panel Products Ltd in Newton-le-Willows.

Starbank are thought to be the largest manufacturer of specialised, high quality laminated panel products. These are used in the manufacture of office and bedroom furniture, shopfitting and a wide range of interior building applications. The company also supplies cubicle and washroom systems for an ever- growing list of leisure premises and commercial operations.

Thorite were originally asked to propose and implement any modifications to the existing compressed air distribution pipework which would reduce pressure drops at various critical workstations.

The Starbank Management Team were aware of the necessity to reduce potential hazards caused by trailing air hoses and also requested that these be eliminated as far as possible. This was achieved to a large extent by the introduction of overhead inner pipework circuits, fed from the main compressed air supply.

Having improved the flow of compressed air, the existing compressors were data-logged, with the resulting information enabling Thorite to propose the most effective equipment options, for both current production levels and planned expansion in the future.

The Starbank Management Team selected two HPC model ASD 57, 30kW air compressors, each with outputs of 195cfm at 7.5 Bar. The installation was to be completed with an up-graded condensate treatment system, in the form of an appropriately sized water/oil separator.

These have now been installed in a new, purpose-built compressor house, along with a Thorite-supplied vertical air receiver, plus one of the existing compressors, dryer and filters. Thorite completed the project with the supply and installation of a new interconnecting pipework system to link the two new compressors with all the other equipment.
