Thorite helps speed smoke detector production

Friday 7th October 2005

Compressed air and fluid process systems specialists, Thorite, have provided assistance to Oldham-based Texecom Ltd, to speed the manufacture of their popular range of smoke detectors.

Texecom was experiencing problems with the manual tap threading of a small hole in an electrical component used within the smoke detectors. Thorite were approached for a solution and recommended a package of the latest pneumatic products.

These comprised a Desoutter Auto-Feed 200 Series unit with a push/pull tapping attachment, a Euroma four-station pneumatic turntable, plus all necessary ancillaries to create a simple pneumatic circuit.

Texecom's own engineers then assembled the units and engineered one-off component holders on the turntable, assisted by Thorite representative Ian White, who also commissioned the complete machine.

The result is an innovative, semi-automatic workstation constructed from "off the shelf" products, which enables an operator to load a component with one hand whilst removing a finished item with the other. Should the process require interruption a pneumatic switch permits the cycle to be broken until ready to recommence.

Smoke detector output has been increased by 20%, whilst overall quality has also risen due to the enhanced accuracy of the system.
