Thorite helps with hazardous handling system

Friday 25th November 2005

Compressed air and fluid process systems specialists, Thorite, have supplied components and engineering expertise to Bolton-based screw conveying equipment manufacturers, Ajax Equipment Ltd.

Ajax received a contract from a major customer in the far east to supply a semi-automated system for emptying pesticide barrels, capable of operating in a "Zone 1" hazardous area.

Normally Ajax would construct screw conveyors powered by electric motors, but as this application involved manipulation of the drums and linear traversing of the screw auger, by pneumatic cylinders, it was decided to utilise air-operated equipment only, which also satisfied the requirement for a totally flameproof installation.

Ajax turned to Thorite for assistance in supplying all pneumatic equipment and necessary control systems.

Thorite's solution comprised a Gast geared air motor, two 500mm x 125mm pneumatic cylinders and an 80mm bore x 950mm stroke rodless cylinder from Norgren, plus a variety of pneumatic valves and ancillary items.

A Thorite designed and constructed pneumatic control panel and engineering drawings complete their input.

The resulting system constructed by Ajax is capable of tipping the pesticide barrels into a horizontal position before penetrating them with a screw auger, which extracts the contents ready for conveying to other equipment.

The complete pneumatic system has recently undergone exhaustive testing at Ajax and is due for shipping in late November.
