Engineering solution nets savings at shellfish sites

Friday 15th February 2008

The UK's leading supplier of compressed air machinery and process systems, Thorite, ha been appointed a Single Source Supplier by Youngs Seafood of Grimsby, thanks to their formulation of a cash-saving engineering solution to production problems.

Thorite worked closely with Youngs' engineers to achieve increased productivity, reduced downtime and improved machinery life at the company's frozen and chilled fish processing plants in Marsden Road, Humberstone Road and South Quay, Grimsby.

In addition, problems of compressed air wastage were addressed, which have led to lower power costs and a subsequent reduction in each of the three plants' carbon footprint. Compressed air quality has also been enhanced, which is vital for food processing operations.

Costs have been further cut by Thorite's decision to buy back the complete stock of pneumatic fittings, valves and cylinders from the three plants, resulting in significant cash flow injection for Youngs, which now simply pays for spares as and when required.

The next phase of savings will see in excess of £600,000 of OEM machinery stock run down over time and being replaced with far more cost effective products from Thorite, as part of a wide range of cost reduction initiatives.

Thorite runs the complete stock control system, with a member of its staff being responsible for the management and replenishment of all pneumatic and compressed air fittings requirements on a weekly basis.

Similarly, a Thorite engineer visits each week and spends a day working with Youngs' in-house team of over 100 engineers, advising on methods to maintain productivity improvements and extend them further where possible.

The benefits from Thorite's multi-faceted approach to efficiency gains in compressed air generation, pneumatic power supply and distribution, plus improved standards and reduced costs of compressor plant repair and maintenance, have led to the company being asked to look at Youngs' operations in other UK locations.
