Thorite turn up the heat at Grampian Country Foods

Wednesday 19th March 2008

Compressed air systems specialist Thorite has supplied and installed a complete new compressor plant to Grampian Country Foods' Sandycroft processing facility, which has achieved major cost savings through its innovative heat recovery system.

Grampian called on Thorite to data-log the existing compressors' performance, as they were keen to install energy efficient machinery which would cut both operating costs and carbon emissions.

Following the data-logging operation Grampian received quotes from several suppliers, but selected Thorite's solution which proposed a combination of fixed and variable speed compressors, an advanced control system, plus a highly effective heat recovery system.

The core of Thorite's solution replaced five existing compressors and ancillaries with two new HPC model CSD102 55kW fixed speed rotary screw and one new HPC model CSDX137SFC 75kW variable speed air compressors, air receivers, air dryers and filters.

The heat recovery system is of a pumped recirculating type.  Duty stand-by pumps, main heat exchanger, over temperature by-pass and all controls were also supplied by Thorite.

This system enables excess heat generated by the new compressors, supplemented by further heat from the refrigeration system, to be recovered and used to pre-heat process water before it enters the steam heat exchanger fed by the oil fired boilers.

By pre-heating the process water Grampian Foods have reduced their boilers' oil consumption by 35,000 litres per year, resulting in a significant saving.

Additionally, the energy efficiency of the compressors and control system has resulted in further reductions in electricity requirements.

Grampian Foods now operates one of the most efficient poultry processing operations in the UK, equipped with the very latest compressed air technology available.  The plant's carbon footprint has been significantly reduced and the company has made major savings on energy costs - producing a four year payback period for the capital value of all the new equipment - and that's not chicken feed!
