Air vacuum pumps cope with cable contaminants

Thursday 6th November 2008

The UK's leading supplier of compressed air products and process systems, Thorite, has solved a sticky production problem for B3 Cable Solutions of Blackley in Lancashire.

B3 manufactures fibre-optic and metallic cables for intranet, internet and other communications networks worldwide. It had a requirement for new vacuum pumps, used in a cable lamination process, which had served the company well for over 30 years.

Initial trials with modern mechanical equivalents had been unsuccessful, due to the breakdowns caused by contamination with differing materials including petroleum jelly. The company then contacted Thorite's Rochdale Sales & Service Centre with a request for help, which in turn led to Thorite's vacuum specialist Clive Halliday visiting B3 to assess the situation.

Although Thorite offers electro-mechanical vacuum solutions where appropriate, Clive recommended the PIAB P6010 COAX range of air-generated vacuum pumps, which he was confident would provide reliable performance unhindered by the contaminants. These are now being used in conjunction with PIAB filtration units and energy saving control systems and will provide quiet, reliable and economical solutions over the next decade and beyond.

Speaking of the installation, Clive said: "This was an intriguing enquiry which needed a particular mix of technologies to ensure long term success, but all the more interesting because of the environment the equipment has to operate in."
