Optimal pump performance aids efficiency at PPG

Monday 24th August 2009

The UK's biggest supplier of compressed air products and process systems, Thorite, has worked closely with leading paint manufacturer PPG Architectural Coatings UK, to upgrade the efficiency of its West Yorkshire production plant.

At a time when many companies are cutting back on investment or simply trying to ride out current economic problems, PPG's new Chief Engineer, Richard Hill, set about correcting production problems which had built up over many years.

Working in partnership with Thorite's Process & Vacuum Manager, Clive Halliday, Richard and his team evaluated pump models most suitable for PPG's production processes, whilst also taking the opportunity to redesign pipework to offer improved efficiency.

Old diaphragm pumps were replaced and the fluid distribution pipework layout improved.  These changes, twinned with a much more effective compressed air supply, ensure that the latest Thorite-supplied ARO EXP diaphragm pumps operate at optimal performance.  The nett result is a plant able to meet increasing demands from its international customer base, but with significantly reduced energy costs.

Clive Halliday commented: "We have worked closely with PPG to meet specific goals in many areas of the plant.  The efficiency gains will not only be of benefit during the present period but will also help create a much stronger company once the recession ends."
