Bradford-based Thorite, the UK's biggest supplier of pneumatic products and process systems, is an avid supporter of the NVQ Apprenticeship training programme. Fifteen staff members from Thorite's Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds, Sheffield, Blackburn, Bolton and Rochdale Sales and Service Centres have now completed their NVQ2 training in subjects including Customer Service, ITQ, Team Leading, and Business Administration.

Both male and female staff members have been involved, at grades from Sales Administrators to Branch Supervisors.  The course work was split between work-based training programmes and local colleges or specialist training providers and also included key skills in literacy and numeracy. Fourteen of the current candidates were under the control of Rochdale Training Association, with one staff member attending Huddersfield Business College.

The courses took between 6 & 9 months to complete, dependent on each person's time availability to do the necessary amount of work, assisted by Assessors from the training providers who were responsible for monitoring and steering each individual along.

The apprenticeship programme is under the control of Alan Lane, Thorite's Group Personnel Manager, who is delighted with the progress the current intake has made and said: "Unlike the TV show, in our version of The Apprentice everyone is a winner: individual members of staff increase their levels of knowledge and confidence, making them better equipped to carry out their responsibilities, whilst customers benefit from higher standards of service - so the company gains all round."
