Valves add value to engineering courses

Valves add value to engineering courses

Tuesday 1st December 2009

The UK's biggest supplier of compressed air products and process systems, Thorite, has donated a number of Norgren pneumatic control spool valves to the Engineering Department at Bradford College, following a request from Neil Barker, the College's Engineering Training Assessor.

The valves, which are normally used by a broad range of manufacturing & process industries to power pneumatics actuators, will enable students on Level 3 EAL two year Advanced Diploma in Engineering courses to get hands-on experience in pneumatic control technology. This in turn will help broaden the students' overall knowledge as they perfect their turning, milling, fitting and maintenance skills.

The valves will assist with demonstrating typical configurations and flow paths whilst being stripped down to reveal their internal construction and maintenance requirements.

Neil Barker is delighted with Thorite's response and said: "I used to work as a Maintenance Engineer at Howarth Scouring company which is located near Thorite's Bradford headquarters and have had many dealings with the company over the years. I knew I could rely on them to help if they possibly could and they've really come up trumps. The valves will give students a direct insight into the technicalities of industrial pneumatic systems and product maintenance, which should greatly assist their career goals of becoming Mechanical or Maintenance Engineers."
