WHOOOOSH! The Thorite rocket challenge

Friday 2nd September 2011

As part of the British Science Festival , Thorite, the UK’s leading supplier of compressed air products, Be Involved and Space Connections will be holding a challenge for young people in Bradford - Woooosh! the Thorite Rocket Challenge.

Thorite have designed and built a powerful compressed air rocket launcher and are challenging young people in Bradford to create rockets that will fly the furthest. In tests the rocket launcher has reached over 180m! The event takes place On Thursday the 15th September at Lower Fields Primary School, Bradford

Between 5pm and 7pm each group will be given the opportunity to launch their rocket across the playing fields. Each team has been provided with a basic tube. It is their job to build a rocket around this tube using whatever materials they can find. Plastic bottles, polystyrene, papier mache, plastic sheet, cardboard, anything that can be used for basic crafts.

Teams from schools across the Bradford area will be competing for a prizes in different categories:

The FURTHEST FLIGHT –  Teams will get to choose the angle of launch and the winning team will be the one that gets the design of their rocket right and chooses the best launch angle. With only one shot it had better be right!

The BEST LOOKING ROCKET – Model making skills to the forefront for this category! Our panel of judges will award a prize to the most appealing design of rocket.

The BOOBY PRIZE … disintegrate on take off… perform cartwheels… crash and burn and this terrible prize could be won by the most embarrassed team.

Spectators are welcome so bring along family and friends. At the school there will be a range of space related activities organised by Bradford based social enterprise Space Connections including smaller rocket launches, a mobile planetarium and opportunities to sample real astronaut space food.
