Thorite's still growing - and government initiatives are helping

Thursday 10th January 2013

Thorite has recently taken on four new young people. Two apprentices have joined its Bradford Head Office, along with two more new employees who were part of the Government's 18-24 year olds Into Business startup scheme. One of these is now working at the Bradford National Distribution Centre and the other has joined the internal administration team in Leeds.

Samuel Edmands (17) from Bradford is one of the new apprentices and is currently working in Thorite's Service Department. As an Apprentice Service Engineer, Samuel is getting to grips with the inner workings of a wide range of air compressors, for both industrial and workshop applications.

Josef Cotterill (17) is a keen photographer and has joined the Marketing Department as Apprentice Marketing Assistant. Joseph is from Huddersfield and his new role will concentrate on helping produce a wide range of digital literature and special product promotions.

Luke Baker (22) is starting as a picker/packer in the busy National Distribution Centre, which prides itself on providing next day delivery nationwide for any of the £millions worth of pneumatic products that Thorite holds in stock. Luke lives in Buttershaw, Bradford and has gained previous work experience with a local skip hire company.

Rounding off the new foursome is Rebecca Harrison (21) from Leeds. Rebecca joins the Sales Administration department in Thorite's Leeds Sales and Service Centre direct from further education and is already liaising with a variety of important industrial, processing and manufacturing customers in the local area.

Thorite believes strongly in both the value of bringing fresh ideas into the company and helping existing staff to attain qualifications which will further their careers, with 22% of the current workforce having completed one or more NVQs in Customer Service, Team Leading, Management Training, or Business and Administration, with a total of 34 NVQs being gained since 2010.

Speaking of the new employees, Alan Lane, Thorite's Group Personnel Manager, said: "This recent new intake represents a 4% rise in the company's overall staffing level, so it is an important step forward, both for Thorite and each individual's future prospects. We work closely with a range of Government-backed staff providers and training establishments throughout the north, including Leeds City College, Appris Management Ltd, and Ingeus UK Ltd in Bradford, plus receiving important assistance from Rochdale Training. I'm confident that each of the four young people who have joined us will benefit greatly from Thorite's commitment to providing them with ongoing opportunities to develop their individual expertise and business skills."
