The President introduces the Prime Minister

Wednesday 20th March 2013

Stephen Wright, Managing Director of Bradford-based Thorite and President of the Bradford Chamber of Commerce, was called on to introduce David Cameron prior to the Prime Minister delivering a pre-budget keynote policy speech. The Prime Minister's strong message on the economy was given in Keighley at the precision engineering company Cinetic Landis.

Prior to the Prime Minister's speech Stephen Wright, along with Roger Coverdale, the Managing Director of Cinetic Landis and Sandy Needham, the Bradford Chamber Chief Executive had the opportunity to talk to David Cameron, about issues concerning manufacturing businesses. They spoke about the problems of skill shortages facing manufacturing, including the difficulties in recruiting the right people, the need for more apprentices, touching on schools' perceptions of what an apprenticeship is and the careers it can lead to. The group also discussed what the government can do to promote manufacturing, both in the local region and in the UK, and at length about the issues that manufacturing businesses and SME's have in getting finance from the banks.

In addition to his role with the Bradford Chamber of Commerce Stephen currently chairs the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Advisory Board of the Engineering Employers Federation, the long-established major trade association for manufacturers. Thorite is the UK's biggest distributor of pneumatic products and process systems and Stephen is heavily involved in this sector of industry, sitting on the Distributor Committee of the British Compressed Air Society.
