A DipCAM for Andy Taylor

A DipCAM for Andy Taylor

Monday 17th September 2018

When Andy Taylor joined Thorite 10 years ago as the North-West Service Engineer, he had completed his apprenticeship some time previously and thought, not unreasonably, that his exam-sitting days were behind him. How wrong can you be because there are further qualifications that engineering staff can work towards, such as the Diploma in Compressed Air Management DipCAM - which Andy has just passed.

For Andy, who is directly involved with the installation of compressed air products, the DipCAM qualification has already had real benefits:

“Even though I have been a Service Engineer for quite a while, I was surprised at how much I learnt while preparing for the exams. It really made me look at the latest products and the way that those products can be best utilised and installed so that ultimately, I can provide customers with a system that performs as it should and is straightforward to maintain. While it took six fairly intensive months to complete and pass the course, it was time well spent because it forced me to focus on how best to do my job.”

From a company perspective the DipCAM qualification is equally important. Governments past and present have emphasised the importance of a qualified staff and this policy is echoed by senior managers at Thorite. There is genuine enthusiasm for Apprenticeship schemes, the Thorite Academy which organises training courses and the encouragement offered to staffs who want to try for a qualification such as DipCAM.

The Diploma in Compressed Air Management isn’t a qualification that is easily earned. The entire course has to be completed within six months, in the students spare time so there needs to be a real commitment. In Andy’s case this wasn’t an issue as he looked upon the course as an opportunity to take an in-depth look at elements of his job that he often took for granted. To date more than ten members of Thorite staff have achieved a Diploma of Compressed Air Management.

The course is overseen by the British Compressed Air Society. For more information please contact Thorite on 0800 034 5850
